An Eid Budget in Pakistan: Costed, Including the Relative Multiplier
Clothes are the part of Eid everyone budgets. Eidi, last-minute food and the extra relatives who 'might drop in' are the part that actually blows the month. Here is the whole thing costed.

Eid spending in Pakistani households is planned as clothes. That is the shopping trip, the thing you can see on a rail, the thing that has a price tag. The month then overflows through three quieter lines: Eidi given, food that was not on the grocery list, and the number of people who walk through the door.
Here is one urban family of four — two adults, two school-age children — costed through an Eid-ul-Fitr month. It is a composition, not a prescription. Eid-ul-Adha has a livestock line this one does not; add that separately rather than stretching these rows.
The month, before anyone extra arrives
| Line | What it covers | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Clothes, shoes, extras for four | One wearable outfit each, not a wardrobe refresh | Rs 28,000 |
| Gifts for parents / in-laws (two households) | One modest gift each house | Rs 8,000 |
| Eidi given (own children + nieces/nephews you cannot skip) | Eight children × Rs 1,000 | Rs 8,000 |
| Food above a normal grocery month | Sheer khurma, extra meat, snacks, fruit | Rs 9,500 |
| Fitra (illustrative, family of four) | Paid before Eid prayer; confirm this year's rate with your mosque | Rs 2,400 |
| Transport, last-minute errands, photos | The leakage around the event | Rs 3,000 |
| Core Eid month | Rs 58,900 |
Clothes are 48% of that core. They are the largest single line, and they are not the reason Eid months go wrong. They are visible. The overflow is the next table.
The relative multiplier
Hosting is priced per extra adult who eats, sits, and may bring children. This is the same idea as the per-guest line in the wedding budget, applied to a living room:
| If this many extra people come through over three days | Food and drink add | Eidi / small gifts add | Month becomes |
|---|---|---|---|
| None — you visit, you do not host | Rs 0 | Rs 0 | Rs 58,900 |
| 8 extras (one afternoon) | Rs 6,400 | Rs 2,000 | Rs 67,300 |
| 20 extras (the "open house") | Rs 16,000 | Rs 5,000 | Rs 79,900 |
| 35 extras (both sides of the family, both days) | Rs 28,000 | Rs 8,000 | Rs 94,900 |
The marginal extra person in this model is about Rs 800–1,000 once food and the Eidi you will feel rude not giving are combined. You do not decide that number at the door. You decide it when you tell people "drop in whenever" without a cap. Twenty unplanned extras are Rs 21,000 — three-quarters of the clothes budget — spent on people who were never in the plan.
How to hold the month
- Set the clothes number first, in rupees, per person. Rs 7,000 each for this family. Going over on one person has to come off another, not off a vague remainder.
- Count the children you will give Eidi to, on paper, before Eid day. An envelope per child beats a wallet on the sofa. If the list is too long, the amount per child has to fall; the list will not.
- Cap the open house. One afternoon, or one side of the family, or "we will visit you". Hospitality without a cap is how the 35-person row happens to people who are not rich.
- Buy the Eid food onto the grocery list two weeks out. Last-minute mithai and fruit are priced as urgency, which is the same trap the grocery basket already flags.
- Move the core number aside in the two months before Eid the way the monthly budget treats any known spike. Eid is not an emergency. Treating it as one is a choice.
What this is not
It is not an argument for a joyless Eid. Rs 58,900 for a family of four is already a real celebration. It is an argument against discovering on the third day that you have spent a month's extra salary because nobody counted the door.
Frequently asked questions
How much should a family spend on Eid in Pakistan?
Whatever you have already set aside, not whatever the bazaar can absorb. As a planning range, many urban families of four will find Rs 40,000–80,000 for a clothes-and-food Eid before heavy hosting; the hosting rows above are how it crosses a lakh.
Is cheap clothing a false economy?
Sometimes. An outfit that cannot be worn to work or school afterwards is 100% Eid cost. An outfit that replaces a worn one is partly a clothing budget brought forward. Buy the second kind first.
What about Eid-ul-Adha?
Add qurbani as its own line — it will dominate the month for households that perform it — and keep this table for clothes, Eidi and hosting. Mixing the two Eids in one budget hides the livestock.
Should children get expensive Eidi from parents?
That is a family rule, not a finance rule. What breaks the month is uncounted Eidi to other people's children. Count those first.
How do I say no to an open house without a fight?
Offer a specific time, or offer to visit. "Come whenever" is the expensive sentence. "We are hosting Sunday afternoon" is hospitality with a denominator.
Sources and method. All rupee figures are an illustrative composition for an urban Pakistani family of four at Eid-ul-Fitr, as at 2026 price levels, designed to show the split between clothes and the quieter lines (Eidi, extra food, hosting). They are not a survey and not a religious ruling. Fitra is shown as a round placeholder — confirm the rate announced for your year and locality with your mosque or the relevant collection body, and do not treat Rs 2,400 as authoritative. Food and clothing prices vary by city and by how 'Eid' you shop. The per-guest add is a modelled marginal cost, in the same spirit as the wedding-budget guest line on this site. This is general information, not personalised financial or religious advice.
