Freelancing Around a Full-Time Job in Pakistan: The Hours That Actually Exist
Evenings and weekends look like 20 hours. After commute, prayer, family and the fact that not every hour bills, most people have about six. Here is what six hours are actually worth.

The pitch is always the same: keep the job, freelance in the evenings, stack income. The calendar that accompanies the pitch is a lie. It counts 7pm to 11pm times five, plus Saturday, and calls it 24 hours. It does not count the commute that lands you home at 7:40, the dinner that is not optional in a joint household, or the Friday that is already a write-off. And it counts every leftover hour as billable, which utilisation already showed is not how freelance income works.
Here is a week built from a normal Pakistani full-time shape, then reduced to hours you could actually sell.
The week, before anyone is a freelancer
| Block | Hours in the week |
|---|---|
| Job, including a 45-minute commute each way, six days (many private offices still run Saturday half-days — this model uses 5.5 job-days) | 52 |
| Sleep (7 hours × 7) | 49 |
| Household, family, meals, prayer, the admin of being a person | 28 |
| Left on the clock | 39 |
| Of which evenings that are not a wreck (3 weeknights × 1.5 h) | 4.5 |
| Saturday afternoon / Sunday block you will actually keep | 4 |
| Hours that could be freelance | 8.5 |
8.5 is the optimistic version — three usable weeknights, not five, and one weekend block, not two. People who keep five weeknights plus both weekend days are either unmarried with no commute or about to be unwell. Plan at 8.5. If you beat it, that is profit, not the baseline.
Then apply utilisation
Not all 8.5 hours bill. Proposals, revisions, payment chasing and learning eat the same share they eat in a full freelance week. Use 50% utilisation for someone still finding clients, 70% for someone with a repeating book:
| Finding-clients season | Repeating-client season | |
|---|---|---|
| Available hours | 8.5 | 8.5 |
| Utilisation | 50% | 70% |
| Billed hours / week | 4.3 | 6.0 |
| At $15 / hour (a mid beginner-to-intermediate dollar rate) | ~$64 / week | ~$90 / week |
| Rough monthly, × 4.3 weeks, before rails and tax | ~$275 | ~$385 |
That monthly figure is real money on a Pakistani salary. It is not a second salary. Anyone selling you "replace your job in three months of evenings" is counting the 24 hours that do not exist, at 100% utilisation, at a rate you do not have. The beginner freelance guide is honest about how long the first client takes; around a job, that clock runs slower, not faster, because the 8.5 hours include the hunting.
When the side work starts costing the day job
The hidden line is quality of the 52 hours you are already paid for. If evening work makes you late, sloppy or hostile, you are funding freelance with employment risk. A rough test:
- You have missed a deadline or a morning at the job twice in a month because of freelance.
- You are hiding the freelance from an employer whose contract forbids it, rather than checking.
- Weekend recovery has disappeared for six weeks.
Two of those three and the side income is too expensive. Cut scope — fewer clients, fixed-price work with a hard cap, a pause — before the job notices. The job is still the main asset; freelance is the option on top of it.
How to use 8.5 hours without fooling yourself
- One service, not three. Evenings cannot support a generalist shop. Pick from the skill that actually sells and refuse adjacent work.
- Repeating clients only, once you have one. Hunting inside 8.5 hours starves delivery. The platform-versus-direct break-even applies harder when hunting hours come out of sleep.
- Weeknights for delivery, one weekend block for admin. Mixing them is how neither happens.
- A written stop time. 10:30pm is a time. "When I'm done" is how Tuesday's job starts at 50%.
Frequently asked questions
Can I freelance if my employment contract forbids it?
Read the contract. Some Pakistani private employers restrict outside work, especially where it overlaps their clients. Ignoring a clause to earn $275 a month is a bad trade for a job that pays the rent. If the contract is silent, still keep client work off the employer's time and equipment.
Is Saturday-Sunday only better than evenings?
Often. Two solid weekend blocks can beat five ruined weeknights. The table's 8.5 can be reshaped as 0 + 8 instead of 4.5 + 4. Same hours, less damage to the job.
Should I take local PKR work or dollar work in the leftover hours?
Dollar work usually pays more per hour but demands overlap with foreign evenings, which are your nights. Local work fits Pakistani evenings and pays less. Price both in billed hours, not in currency romance.
When do I quit the job?
When freelance has paid the bills for several months at the hours you can sustain without the job — which is more than 8.5. Quitting from a side hustle's peak month is a common way to meet the emergency-fund article the hard way.
Do I need a separate machine and SIM?
A separate login and a separate payment account, at least. Mixing client files with the office laptop is how people get fired and how clients get their data tangled in an employer dispute.
Sources and method. The weekly hour split is an illustrative composition for a Pakistani full-time job with commute and family obligations, not a time-use survey. Utilisation rates follow the same editorial method as the freelance-rates article on this site. Dollar figures are worked examples at a stated $15/hour, before platform fees, payment-rail costs and tax — not average earnings. Employment contracts differ; this is general information, not legal advice, and not a promise of side income.
