IELTS vs Duolingo vs Skipping the Test: A Costed Decision for Pakistan
IELTS in Pakistan is about Rs 72,000 before prep. Duolingo is about Rs 20,000. Neither number is the bill if you retake — and some applications do not need a test at all.

English tests are bought in Pakistan as if the fee were the cost. The fee is the booking. Prep, a likely retake, and the weeks you are not earning while you sit in an academy are the rest. And a third option is routinely ignored: confirming that the university, employer or visa actually requires this test, because a growing list of programmes will take a degree taught in English, an interview, or nothing.
Sticker prices first, cited, then the full ticket.
What the tests cost to book, as at August 2026
The British Council Pakistan IELTS booking page lists IELTS Academic / General Training on computer at Rs 71,320 in some cities and Rs 71,920 in others, IELTS for UKVI at Rs 72,000, and IELTS Life Skills (A1/B1) at Rs 50,000 in selected cities. Confirm the figure for your city and date at booking — the page itself is the authority, and fees move.
The Duolingo English Test is priced globally at US$70 for a single attempt on Duolingo's own materials (a two-test bundle is sold cheaper per sitting). In rupees that is roughly Rs 19,000–22,000 depending on the card rate and bank charges the day you pay; this article uses Rs 20,000 as a working conversion. Local taxes and card fees can add a little. Duolingo is not accepted everywhere IELTS is. That, not the $50 gap, is the actual product difference.
| IELTS (computer, Academic/GT) | Duolingo English Test | |
|---|---|---|
| Booking fee (working figure) | Rs 71,320–71,920 | ~Rs 20,000 |
| Where you sit it | A centre, on their schedule | A room at home, on yours, with their proctoring rules |
| Accepted by | The default for UK/Aus/NZ visas and a huge university list | Thousands of programmes; not a substitute where a visa still names IELTS/UKVI |
| Score delivery | Days, not minutes | Typically within about 48 hours |
The bill that is not the fee
| Line | IELTS path (illustrative) | Duolingo path (illustrative) |
|---|---|---|
| Booking | Rs 72,000 | Rs 20,000 |
| Prep course or academy, 6–8 weeks | Rs 20,000–40,000 (use Rs 30,000) | Often self-prep; Rs 0–10,000 of mocks |
| Books / extra mocks | Rs 4,000 | Rs 2,000 |
| Probability-weighted retake (see below) | 0.4 × 72,000 = Rs 28,800 | 0.3 × 20,000 = Rs 6,000 |
| Expected cash out | ~Rs 134,800 | ~Rs 28,000–38,000 |
Retake weights are editorial, not official pass rates: many first-time IELTS candidates in Pakistan miss a band in one module and sit again; Duolingo retakes are cheaper, so people also sit them more casually. Use your mock scores. If your mocks are already at the required band, set the retake weight near zero and the IELTS ticket falls back toward Rs 100,000 with prep, or ~Rs 72,000 without an academy.
Rs 135,000 is a serious number. It is in the same neighbourhood as a chunk of a local master's year, which is the right comparison if the test is a door into a foreign degree whose own fees are in another league. It is a terrible number if you are sitting IELTS "for the CV" with no application attached.
When the right answer is to skip both
- The programme list you are actually applying to accepts a medium-of-instruction letter from your university. Get that letter. Do not invent a test.
- The job is in Pakistan and the employer has never asked. Spend the hours on speaking practice that shows up in an interview, not on a band score nobody will see.
- You need UKVI IELTS specifically. Then Duolingo is not a cheaper substitute; it is a different product. Buy the visa test or change the visa plan.
- Your English is the problem, not the certificate. A test date in four weeks will not fix that. The 90-day speaking plan on this site is cheaper than a retake.
If you do need a score, pick the test the receiver named, then minimise prep spend: official mocks before any academy, and no academy at all if mocks are already there. Free structured study exists; certificates worth your time is the filter for not buying a second, useless PDF on top of the test.
Frequently asked questions
Is Duolingo easier than IELTS?
It is shorter, at home, and a different format. "Easier" is how people under-prep and retake. Check whether your target institutions accept it before you care about easy.
Does paper-based IELTS still exist in Pakistan?
Bookings in 2026 are overwhelmingly computer-delivered at official centres. Do not plan around a paper date you have not seen on the British Council or IDP booking page.
Can I use a One Skill Retake instead of a full IELTS retake?
Where your centre offers it, yes — and it is usually cheaper than a full re-sit. Price that option on the booking page; this article's retake line assumes a full fee as a conservative expected value.
Will a 7.0 expire?
Most organisations treat IELTS and DET as valid for two years. Do not sit a test in 2026 for a 2029 application "to get it done".
Should I sit IELTS just to motivate my English?
No. Motivation at Rs 72,000 a sitting is an expensive coach. Put that money in practice hours and sit a test when a receiver has asked for a number.
Sources and method. IELTS fees: British Council Pakistan IELTS booking page, Academic/General Training on computer listed at Rs 71,320 or Rs 71,920 by city, IELTS for UKVI at Rs 72,000, Life Skills at Rs 50,000 — confirm at the time of booking, as the listed "effective from" date and city bands change. Duolingo English Test: official single-attempt price US$70; rupee working figure Rs 20,000 is an illustrative conversion plus typical card friction as at August 2026, not a live mid-market rate. Prep costs and retake weights (0.4 / 0.3) are editorial expected-value assumptions so the full ticket can be shown; they are not published candidate statistics. Acceptance of DET versus IELTS is determined by each university and visa route — check the receiver, not this table. This is general information, not immigration or admissions advice.
