How to Write a CV for Your First Job in Pakistan (With a Template)
You have no work experience, so the CV has to be built out of everything else. Here is the one-page structure that works in Pakistan, a full template you can copy, and the lines to delete immediately.
The first-job CV problem is circular: employers want experience, and you cannot get experience without a first job. The way out is not to pad the CV until it looks like someone else's. It is to build one page out of what you genuinely have — education, projects, part-time work, and demonstrable skills — arranged so a recruiter reading for fifteen seconds finds the relevant part.
This guide gives you the structure, a complete template to copy, and the specific things that get first-job CVs discarded in Pakistan.
The rules, before the template
- One page. With no work history, two pages signals padding.
- PDF, never Word, unless a job ad explicitly demands otherwise. Formatting survives, and it cannot be accidentally edited.
- Name the file properly.
Ayesha-Khan-CV.pdf, notcv final final 2.pdf. It is visible in the recruiter's inbox and it is the first thing they judge. - No photograph, unless asked. Common in older local templates, increasingly unnecessary, and it costs you space you need.
- Plain, single-column layout. Two-column graphic templates confuse automated screening systems and gain you nothing.
- Tailor it per application. Not a rewrite — a reordering, so what matches the job ad sits nearest the top.
What local employers expect that global advice gets wrong

The structure, in order
- Header — name, city, phone, professional email, LinkedIn or portfolio link.
- Professional summary — two lines, tailored to the role.
- Education — highest first, with marks or grades.
- Projects — the section that replaces work experience. Often your strongest.
- Experience — internships, part-time work, tuition, family business, volunteering. All of it counts.
- Skills — specific and honest.
- Certifications — only completed ones.
Projects sits above Experience deliberately. With no employment history, a real project you can demonstrate is stronger evidence than three weeks of unpaid office work, and it should be read first.

Replace every line. The point of the example is the shape — how a person with one internship and no career fills a page credibly.
The bullet formula that makes this work
Look at the difference between these two lines describing identical work:
- "Worked on inventory system for a shop."
- "Built a stock-tracking web app in Django and PostgreSQL for a local retailer, cutting monthly reconciliation from around 6 hours to under 1."
Same project. The second one is hireable. The formula is:
Action verb + what you built or did + the tools + the measurable result.
Start every bullet with a verb — built, wrote, taught, fixed, managed, reduced, deployed. Never with "Responsible for". And find a number wherever one honestly exists: how many, how long, how much faster, what percentage. Approximate honestly rather than inventing precision — "around 6 hours" is fine and true; a fabricated "43% efficiency gain" is neither.
Delete these immediately
- "Hardworking, dedicated, team player." Every CV says it, so it distinguishes nobody.
- "References available upon request." Assumed. Wastes a line.
- Skill rating bars. Five filled circles out of five means nothing — five according to whom?
- Date of birth, marital status, father's name, religion.
- An unprofessional email address. Make a new one; it takes two minutes.
- Courses you are "currently doing". List it when it is finished.
- Anything untrue. Claimed language fluency and claimed software skills are both tested at interview, routinely, and being caught ends the process immediately.
If you have genuinely nothing to put in Projects
Then that is this month's task, and it is a smaller task than it sounds. Two weekends produce something real:
- Rebuild a local business's terrible website and write up what you changed and why.
- Take a public dataset, analyse it, publish the findings.
- Redesign a real product's packaging or app screen as a self-directed brief.
- Volunteer your skill to a local charity or a family business, and record the outcome.
Label self-directed work honestly as self-directed. A clearly-labelled personal project is respected; the same project implied to be paid client work is a problem when someone checks. That rule is identical to the one in the freelancing guide — and if you are building a portfolio anyway, those two efforts are the same effort.
Sending it
- Match the file to the job. Reorder your Skills line so what the ad asks for comes first.
- Write a three-line email body — the role you are applying for, one sentence on why you fit it, and a thank you. Not a covering letter unless one was requested.
- Attach the PDF. Do not paste the CV into the email body.
- Apply to fewer jobs, better. Ten tailored applications beat a hundred identical ones, and cost less of your time in total.
- Follow up once, after a week. Once.

A CV is only read after something else has earned the click. Increasingly that something is your profile rather than your covering note — and being findable in a recruiter's search is a different problem from being impressive once they arrive, which is what the LinkedIn breakdown separates out.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a first-job CV be?
One page. Without work history there is nothing that justifies a second page, and using one signals padding to anyone who reads a lot of CVs.
Should I include my CNIC number?
On a CV sent directly to an employer, it is commonly expected in Pakistan and is fine to include. Do not publish it on a public job-board profile or anywhere it can be scraped.
Do I need a cover letter?
Only when the ad asks for one. Otherwise a three-line email does the same job and is more likely to be read in full.
Should I include matriculation marks?
Yes, for a first job in Pakistan — local employers do read them. Drop matriculation once you have two or three years of work behind you.
What if there is a gap in my education?
State it in one short factual line — a year for improvement exams, illness, or family circumstances. An unexplained gap invites worse assumptions than the true explanation almost always does.
Is a designed, colourful CV template better?
For most roles, no. Single-column plain text is read reliably by both humans and screening software. For design roles the CV itself is a work sample — but the portfolio still carries the argument.
